Coming out of Retirement
For many reasons, some retired men and women choose to come out of retirement and re-enter the workforce. Whether done by personal choice, a lack of financial planning or factors beyond a single person’s control, there are many reasons to rejoin the working world. However, when a person attempts to get a job in today’s job market, it’s hard enough for graduates fresh out of college to find employment, much less those who have taken extended time off, regardless of age. Here are some recommendations to ease the transition and help secure a job, if your former position is no longer available.Prepare for your comeback with some classes Not necessarily an ultimatum to put yourself back through college, simply a recommendation that classes might help to update you on subtle turns the world has taken since you’ve been on reprieve, just in case you haven’t followed up as thoroughly as you might have were you on the job. Consider the technological and computing developments over just the past 5 years. Almost every business across a variety of industries currently maintains their own website and most have integrated in some sort of social media presence. Night classes and community college classes can help to update you on these technologies so that you are either still prepared to do you old job or equipped to find new opportunities in the modern marketplace.Sell your experience You may not have a recent work history or cutting edge college degree, but what nearly all retired folks have is a wealth of wisdom and work experience. Showing your ability to transition across a variety of jobs in the past and handle them with success certainly bodes well for any future prognosis. Years of knowing how the real world works is something that can’t be taught in any college classroom.Talk to your friends Using personal connections and resources to gain employment is nothing to be frowned upon. One of the benefits of growing older is the opportunity to meet a wide variety of new people. These relationships, whether old colleagues you’ve kept up with, friends from years past or new people you’ve had the chance to meet since retiring, all can help you to re-enter the workforce, both in the form of potential opportunities and advice from those who have faced a similar situation.
